Season’s greetings 2023

Dear Members,

The year 2023 is coming to an end. It is the first year after Covid, and the GMI members could meet in person again at the conference in Budva, Montenegro. It was so great to see you all after the long pause!

Our thanks go to all conference attendees for their ongoing interest, and hearty thanks to our sponsors, speakers, our Members Zoran Lasica and Matthias Mink for their outstanding support in organizing this conference.

As per your vote at the AGM, we will strive for a 2024 conference in autumn, most likely around mid of October.

Your good ideas will help us tremendously in the organization, please let us know!

As you know, Dr. Yusuf Civelekoğlu, our former Chairman, decided to step down. We thank him again for years of service to our community at this opportunity.

The present Steering Committee would really appreciate YOUR active contribution to our community and therefore ask YOU to consider to join the Board!

We as the Board, traditionally meet up in Düsseldorf during the “DüsselBOOT” Boatshow to discuss in person the upcoming year and to plan the year.

For 24 – 26. January 2024, we have kept two rooms spare for Members interested in joining the Board. Please think about joining, and let us know in a timely manner, as the hotel will need a decision soon.

This is the ultimate chance to get a “soft start” into the Board, and we will take the time to make you acquainted with the fun. Take it!

We wish you and your family MERRY CHRISTMAS and a happy and peaceful New Year!

Looking forward meeting you in person 2024 again!

Your

Steering Committee

Live – CONFERENCE at Budva – Montenegro 13/17 March 2023

Dear Members and Friends of GMI,

Further to our circulation in July 2022 (see below), here are the latest news:

Due to various reasons, including accommodation issues in October, we had to postpone the conference to March 2023 – however, we have extended the activity by one day – the “in-depth training” day.

Please block Monday, March 13, to Friday, March 17, 2023. Our first-ever Spring Conference!

We will circulate the program very soon, and the conference costs will be similar to our past conferences. Room prices will be around 70 EUR for single occupancy and about 90 EUR for a double room.

Budva can be reached through the airports of Podgorica and Tivat, and also from Dubrovnik airport.

Next to our members

Marine Claims Services, Germany,

The Maritime Crime Group, Netherlands, and,

German Competence Centre for Marine Criminality;

following law enforcement agencies and international organisations continue to be interested in participation and support:

National Coordination Centre of the Montenegro Border Police

ICITAP, the US Government’s International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program – Dear Brian Ripley (most of you know him) is trying to arrange a panel so we can meet the Delaware Register Officers and other colleagues from the USA.

EMPACT, the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats.

We anticipate having with us members and supporters, among others, from Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, France, Hungary, Ireland,  Italia (Guardia di Finanza), Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, Sweden, the UK (Border Police), the USA, and from the organisations FRONTEX, EUROPOL, INTERPOL, and more.

The conference highlight should be a sea trip from Budva to Bar by high-speed law enforcement vessels – with an appended “in-depth session” for vessel identification – using devices to read out inboard and outboard engines. In addition, a visit to the new training centre for the Montenegro Coast Guard is planned.

Above all: We will arrange enough time for networking and make flexible breaks after every presentation.

So, please graciously forgive our shaky progress, save the dates, and we will revert now with the tentative program.

Last but certainly not least: Zoran, Matthias “Süd”: We greatly appreciated help from Zoran Lasica, Head of the National Coordination Centre of the Montenegro Border Police, as well as Matthias Mink, Head of the German Competence Centre for Marine Criminality.

We are looking forward to seeing you all in Montenegro!

Take care, stay healthy – and block your calendar – now!

Kind Regards

Your SteerCo

Motor yacht sinks in Italy, crew safe

An Italian crew has been rescued after their yacht, 39m Saga, sank about nine nautical miles from Catanzaro Marina.

The boat was was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo when the crew reported it was taking on water at the stern. The Guardia Costiera (Italian Coast Guard) dispatched two patrol vessels to the scene, and four crew members were immediately evacuated.

A tow was attempted to take the yacht to Crotone, with the remaining crew being transferred, but according to ansa the situation got worse due to the weather conditions and the yacht’s incline.

Reports suggest that the team attempted to strand the yacht but despite best efforts, it sank quickly.

There will be an official investigation into the incident, but online speculation is focused around reports of water ingress from the stern.

“Beach clubs look terrific but are an extra risk. Same for the windows close to the waterline, or even below it. Building such designs is asking for trouble,” says one commentator. “The growing trend in all boats to put windows, doors and toy access on or below the waterline is crazy and not driven by basic design logic,” says another.

According to Yachtcharterfleet the 39.4m motor yacht My Saga was built by Monaco Yachting & Technologies. Her interior was styled by design house Jean-Marc Achy architecte and she was completed in 2007. The vessel’s exterior design was the work of Tim Heywood Design.

Saga was built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin diesel-electric Caterpillar (C-18) 503hp engines, the yacht had a range of up to 4,606 nautical miles and was said to accommodate up to 12 guests in six staterooms, with eight crew members.

Earlier this year (11 August 22), a brand new ISA superyacht Aria SF was engulfed by fire while cruising off the coast of Formentera in Spain. In June 2022, a similar sized yacht was involved in an incident and began taking on water near Doganbey Island off Seferihisar in western Turkey.
